Accountability - Everyone says you
can’t run government like a business but I believe that government must be much
more business-like because the operation and function of government affects
everyone. The single lack of one thing in government is accountability. The more
the operation of government is open for public viewing the better the operation
becomes. I think Tony Blair said it best, that: ‘The beneficiary of public
services should be the public, not those that provide the service’!
Municipal Affairs - Municipalities
must understand that legislation and regulation can be a barrier to growth. In
fairness, I will say that legislation can also be an accelerator of growth. I
had the opportunity to listen to the mayor of Milwaukee some time ago as he
related the experiences of a city that rewarded value-added growth through

Knowing Your Customer - Good business owners conduct market research every day
by either talking to customers, suppliers or checking out the prices of your
competitors. A more formal process can produce a wealth of information about
your products and services, establish a benchmark of what your customers think
about your product or service and tell you about trends in the selling
environment you operate in every day.
Successful businesses owners know their customers and their competitors. This
knowledge is usually built over time and involves constant gathering information
which insures you more about the people you hope to sell and how they will react

Where to improve the sales function - Unfortunately, many owners and managers
resort to ad hoc cost cutting without thinking strategically about the possible
effects on revenue. Reducing the sales efforts seems to run against the first

Wayne Fiander
Wayne Fiander offers over 30 years of
combined experience in management, marketing and government affairs (both local
and the Province of Nova Scotia). He has managed a single retail location, a
60,000 square foot distribution centre ($100 million in annual sales), and as
well performed the marketing and merchandising function for a 78 store banner
program known as Pharmasave.
Wayne’s government experience is five
years at the provincial level in the Premier’s Office, the busiest office in
Atlantic Canada. He’s had the privilege of working for not one but two Premiers,
Donald Cameron and Rodney MacDonald. Wayne served as President of the
East
Hants & Districts Chamber of Commerce from 2004 to 2006, and is currently the
2010 President of the Nova Scotia Chambers of Commerce.
